Improving Print Quality Through Optimization

   Wednesday, March 16

   10:30 a.m. – Noon

   Texas Ballroom

About This Session

The flexographic industry is continually looking for ways to increase productivity through print optimization. Recently, the industry has seen presses running faster and longer to meet demand. These higher speeds have introduced a variety of challenges.

Join Bobby and Brad, along with their industry experts, as they discuss the different areas of the flexographic printing process to explain how each element—from digital prepress and screening to ink, plates and anilox rolls—can be optimized to improve overall quality and production.

The industry experts will discuss the challenges they faced and solutions they implemented to streamline processes for high-speed pressruns that produce print results with a higher quality and consistency.

Presentations & Speakers

FORUM 2022 headshot Steve Parato

Optimizing Graphics for High-Speed (Long-Run) Printing

Steven Parato, Operations Manager at Cyber Graphics

Presentation Details
Steven will emphasize the considerations for optimizing graphics for both long-run and high-speed flexographic printing. Topics will include what to look for in the benchmarking process, screen selection for highlights, surface screens for optimal solid ink lay-down, establishing plate curves for print latitude and best practices for color separations.
Speaker Bio
About Steven: Steve is an operations manager with Cyber Graphics. He has worked with Cyber Graphics 10 years and currently oversees the prepress and color management at the Milwaukee, WI and Cleveland, OH facilities. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business management and has 25+ years of experience working in various roles within print production, prepress, color management, customer service, digital printing, quality control and training.
Steve lives in Milwaukee, WI and in his free time enjoys boating, traveling, pro sports, coaching baseball and miniature golfing with his family.

Optimizing Flexographic Plates and Sleeves for High-Speed Printing

David Stokes, Technical Advisor at Flint Group Flexographic Products

Presentation Details
Join David as he discusses the importance of controlling all areas of the flexographic printing process as press speeds continue to increase with modern presses. Ensuring that plates, inks, anilox rolls and sleeves are optimized for high-speed printing will allow for faster printing than ever before. All while maintaining the high quality that your customers demand.
Speaker Bio
About David: David is a 2011 graduate of the Clemson University Graphic Communications program. While in school, he was a student assistant at the Sonoco Institute. After graduating, David worked for Sonoco Trident, working with color management and proofing. In 2018, he began working at Flint Group Flexographic, now known as XSYS.
FORUM 2022 headshot Darris Smith

Optimizing Ink Transfer Systems for High-Speed Printing

Darris Smith, Technical Graphics Adviser at Harper Corporation of America

Presentation Details
Darris will explore how multiple parts of the ink transfer system affect flexographic printing. Rotating machine parts do not travel at the same speed as the web itself. Therefore, anilox roll cell geometry is affected. Ink viscosity and air trapping play a significant role in ink flow, while doctor blade technology, as well as back doctoring, greatly affect the release of the inks.
Speaker Bio
About Darris: Darris has more than 40 years in the graphics industry with 18 years as a press operator in both flexography and offset. He has experience operating narrow web, wide web and sheet fed presses in the packaging and pharmaceutical industries. He also spent time in color matching, plate making and supervisory roles. His attention to detail led him to find a niche in process printing and being part of several teams to garner FTA awards.
Today, Darris provides his vast wealth of knowledge to customers all over the US via Harper Corporation of America’s Technical Solutions Group.

Optimizing Ink Systems for High-Speed Printing

Jeremy Rohan, Area Technical Manager at Siegwerk

Presentation Details
Races are won by the team with the best preparedness before race day. Areas like graphics, plate making, plate mounting, and ink systems have a more important role to high-speed printing as press speeds increase.
Join Jeremy as he discusses the elements needed to print at higher press speeds. He will also talk about other areas of the workflow prior to press and their importance to the flexographic printing operation.
Speaker Bio
About Jeremy: Jeremy has been in flexographic printing for 28 years with various printing companies. Previously, he was part of a printing process improvement team tasked with efficiency and production at multiple sites. Jeremy has also trained in Six Sigma black belt techniques.
Jeremy’s previous positions have been press operator, press supervisor, prepress supervisor, graphics manager, press manager and now area technical manager for Siegwerk.
