About This Session

The challenges of transferring ink on flexible packaging continue to grow as sustainable films and recycled materials increase in use. Fortunately, technologies such as improved film treatments, enhanced plate surface patterns and LED plate exposure are helping flexography meet the challenge. With these improved technologies come enhancements to the printing characteristics, such as prepress and plate making.

Join Scott, Shawn and their panel of experts as they describe the fundamentals of ink transfer and surface energy, as well as how new prepress technologies can maximize your print results and overall print quality.

Optimizing Ink Laydown with Flexographic Plate Technologies

Scott Rickard, Staff Associate Investigator at DuPont Image Solutions

Presentation Details
Scott will examine the factors of the plate package that affect the overall quality of ink transfer. Hear how modern plate technologies can be used to help optimize ink film thickness for process, spot and white solid printing. He will also discuss how opacity alone does not adequately represent the quality of the white ink film, and how that can affect the overall print quality.
Speaker Bio
About Scott: Scott is a staff associate investigator at DuPont Image Solutions, working in the Tech Apps R&D team testing and developing new plate formulations and technologies in the flexographic industry. After studying and earning his B.S. in graphic communications and M.S. in packaging science from Clemson University, Scott started at Dupont as a technical service specialist in 2015 before transitioning to his current role in 2018.

Prepress Procedures for Optimizing Ink Transfer on Film

Mark Samworth, Color Expert and FTA Hall of Fame Member

Presentation Details
The challenges of transferring ink in the flexible packaging market continue to grow as sustainable films and recycled materials increase in use. Technologies such as improved film treatments, enhanced plate surface patterns, and LED plate exposure are helping flexography meet this challenge. With these technologies comes changes in printing characteristics—that may require changes in prepress.
Join Mark as he briefly reviews these new technologies and examines how FTA FIRST Methodology can be used to achieve optimum print quality on these new substrates. He will also explain minimizing the disruption of new film treatments, plate surface patterns and plate exposure technologies.
Speaker Bio
About Mark: Mark began his career with DuPont, where he held numerous positions in the areas of flexographic plates and electronic imaging. Mark joined Esko in 1997 and focused on development, marketing, and industry support of Esko color and imaging products. These include screening, color management, expanded gamut, CDI and LED plate exposure. He holds 11 patents in digital imaging—including FlexoCal, Hybrid Screening, Plate Cell Patterning, Concentric Screening, PressSync, and Equinox expanded gamut technology. In May of 2011, Mark was inducted as the 49th member of the FTA Hall of Fame.
Mark received his bachelor’s in printing science from RIT and his MBA from the University of Delaware. He lives in Wilmington, Delaware with his wife Katherine and has two daughters.
